Metabolite Identification Interest Group / Welcome to the new interest group
For those who are really serious about metabolite identification, in particular extending into de novo identification of metabolites, NMR is essential. With relatively new low volume cryoprobes the sensitivity disadvantage of NMR is nowhere near as bad as most people think.  I foresee NMR re-entering our field, not so much for routine fingerprinting, but specifically for met ID.

Standards & Databases Interest Group / Rumours of the death of MSI have been greatly exaggerated......
Great to hear about the new publication Jules. Fully agree with you that MSI is not dead!

In fact we also very recently published an NMR metabolite library, which is held in a new MSI-compliant database at the University of Birmingham.

For those that are interested, the paper \"Birmingham Metabolite Library: a publicly accessible database of 1-D 1H and 2-D 1H J-resolved NMR spectra of authentic metabolite standards (BML-NMR)\", by Ludwig et al., can be found at:
http://www.springerlink.com/content/er1713p572008387/

We based our database on the MSI-endorsed reporting requirements for an NMR metabolomics study:
http://www.springerlink.com/content/l774n76k4m86kj25/

Importantly, however, there were a number of modifications required to the original proposed reporting requirements. All the changes we made are summarised in a Table in the paper.

Environmental Metabolomics Interest Group / eMICE_2011 Environmental Metabolomics Intercomparison Update
This is great news Dan. I realise this second study is on-going, but do you envision a 3rd NMR intercomparison in 2012 or 2013? Would be good for the community to know that this is an on-going effort, with an open invitation for further labs to join next time around.

As a request to the community: please let Dan or I know about similar intercomparison studies, as it could be more beneficial if international efforts are aligned.

NMR Interest Group / New NMR library now available for 2-D J-resolved spectra....
A new, free resource is available at http://www.bml-nmr.org/

Its the Birmingham Metabolite Library of NMR Spectra, a collection of 3328 experimental 1D and 2D J-resolved NMR spectra of 208 metabolite standards. This resource has been established by the metabolomics researchers at the University of Birmingham, UK, and was funded by the UK BBSRC.

The 2-D J-resolved spectra will soon be made available through other international databases, such as the BMRB and the HMDB.
