Is there any intention to migrate archived and future posts from the existing xcms mailing list to here, so all past xcms mailing list content will be searchable through this forum? Also, will the existing xcms mailing list continue to be maintained and accessed separately from this forum? It doesn't make much sense to keep them separated...

I agree, it would make sense to migrate the existing XCMS mailing list content to the forum.
And it seems that there are ways (http://http://stackoverflow.com/questions/616772/is-there-a-good-way-to-migrate-from-a-mailman-list-to-an-web-forum) to migrate.
Unfortunately, mail2forum v2 - which would work with phpBB 3, is still in alpha (http://http://mail2forum.com/v20-development/status/).

We'll look into it. The existing XCMS mailing list will continue to be maintained, until we have a solution for the migration.
