Postdoctoral researcher / Doctoral candidate (Molecular Food Sciences)

The University of Turku (Finland) is a world-class multidisciplinary research university which offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education.

Postdoctoral researcher or doctoral candidate (Molecular Food Sciences) starting on 16.3.2017 or according to a mutual agreement for one year (with possible extension to be negotiated).

Food Chemistry and Food Development are the two scientific disciplines of the Molecular Food Sciences at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Turku. The internationally oriented disciplines are specialized in chemistry, biochemistry, properties and development of foods from natural resources. We apply versatile methods of chemical analysis, metabolomics and sensory science, as well as of environmentally friendly technologies in characterization and development of foods. Functions of natural bioactive food components, especially in relation to the unique northern environment in Finland, give us the vast possibilities in research and teaching in the Molecular Food Sciences.

We are seeking for an aspiring researcher with strong motivation and skills for research in one or more areas such as following:

- food and nutritional metabolomics, with emphasis on NMR metabolomics

- lipid chemistry / lipidomics,

- food aroma compounds,

- chemistry and technology of polysaccharides.

Competent candidates should have advanced practical experience in NMR spectroscopy and metabolomics, LC(–MS(/MS)) and/or GC(–MS(/MS)).

Candidates should have a successful background and a PhD degree in food chemistry / food sciences or related field e.g. biosciences, organic/natural compound chemistry, and experience in statistical and multivariate data analysis methods. Accomplished PhD candidates are also encouraged to apply.

The applicants are expected to have an excellent track record in carrying out high-quality research and producing publications with excellent skills for independent and team work in a research group. The applicants are expected to have good English language skills.

The salary is determined in accordance with the universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel). For postdoctoral researcher, the salary is within the demand levels 4–6 where the work specific salary component is 2,475.31–3,340.77 €/month. For doctoral candidates, the salary is within the demand levels 2–4 where the work specific salary component is 1985,85 – 2475,31€/month. In addition, there is a share increase based on the personal performance, which is, at most, 46,3% of the base salary.

There is a trial period of four months.
