RESEARCH FELLOW IN PLANT ANALYTICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT - CAMDEN CAMPUS
REFERENCE NO. 1566/0714

The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment is a research-intensive faculty. The Centre for Carbon, Water and Food (CCWF) based on Camden Campus is a major new facility that houses a number of Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellows and other high profile researchers. The centre contains high-end analytical capability among a range of mass spectrometry and other analytical equipment in the environmental sciences.

Research in plant metabolism and related areas has been growing strongly. With funding from the ARC, Grain Research & Development Corporation and other sources, the CCWF is poised to quickly grow its research portfolio. That growth depends on ensuring new GC-MS analytical facilities (LC-qTOF, GC-QQQ, thermal desorption GC-MS, others) operate efficiently and continually. The position is designed to collaborate with several research groups, especially working with Dr Andrew Merchant, in the broad field of plant metabolism.

Based in Camden, you will have primary responsibility for delivering routine analysis of plant metabolites such as sugars, organic acids and a range of secondary compounds involved in plant protection using all of the available instrumentation (list available). You will also be involved directly in a range of research projects with extensive opportunities for publication, experimentation and exploration of novel analytical and experimental techniques.

To be successful in this position, you will have:
•   a PhD in Analytical Biochemistry or Plant Metabolism, or related field
•   experience in use of GC-MS and LC-MS for analysis of plant metabolites
•   experience in analysis of data from GC-MS (preferably MassHunter)
•   experience in publication of data from GC-MS analysis
•   experience in teaching and giving support to research students
•   a demonstrated ability to deliver high quality research output in leading journals
•   a demonstrated ability to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects.

Highly regarded will be evidence of: cross-university cooperation in research, international research cooperation and the ability to interact with rural R&D organisations.

The position is full-time fixed term for two years subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.
Remuneration package: $110K p.a. (including base salary at level B Step1 $93K, plus leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation). Visa sponsorship and some relocation support will be available if required.
